IGNITE TALKS!
SLIDE 2: This presentation aims to answering these questions: What is learning? What are the different type of learning styles? How is learning beneficial to our lives? How was learning implemented in English 1102? What have I learned about learning? What do I plan to do with all the skills I learned from English 1102? SLIDE 3: Learning is the act or process of acquiring knowledge or skill. There are different types of learning styles: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. Everyone has at least one dominant learning style, typically the style which they use the most during studying or listening to lecture. There are different types of learning styles bc each learning style uses a different part of the brain SLIDE 4: Visual Learners are the "seers" with a photographic memory. They learn best by looking at graphs, watching a demonstration, or reading. Pros: easy to remember things that they saw Cons: May have difficulty focusing while listening to an explanation SLIDE 5: Auditory learners are the "hearers" - They would rather listen to things being explained than read about them and learn best by hearing things like a lecture Pros: Can easily retain information that was presented in lecture class Cons: Other noises can be a distraction resulting in need for a quiet place when studying SLIDE 6: Kinesthetic learners are the "touchers" They learn best through a "hands-on" experience like actually doing an activity Pros: Easily learn by doing example problems and activities Cons: Difficulty focusing while listening to an explanation SLIDE 7: We had readings which talked about different approaches to learning. Some of the readings were: "Good Video Games and Good Learning" by James Paul Gee "HOMOGO" by Mimi Ito The readings basically showed us the non-traditional ways to learning by how we are constantly learning in everything we do SLIDE 8: HOMAGO taught us about peer-based learning and how we informally learn from our peers when we hang out, mess around and geek out. Mimi Ito argued that we learn most of our information from our peers SLIDE 9: Good Video Games and Good Learning argued that good video games incorporate good learning principles, principles supported by the current research in cognitive learning. SLIDE 10: English 1102 had flexible boundaries on how to learn which allowed students with time to hangout in class SLIDE 11: English 1102 supported interest-driven activities by allowing us to explore and share things that we were interested in SLIDE 12: Based on James Gees research paper, i realized that English 1102 fostered the identity, interaction, customization, and explore principles to good learning. SLIDE 13: English 1102 allowed me to realized that I am more or a formal writer that would rather write papers than write blogs every week SLIDE 14: The class interaction was very supportive by working around the system of giving each other constructive feedback. For example, the "yes and" responses allowed us to agree with the person then state our opinion SLIDE 15: Lacy allowed us to explore our own interest driven activities like pick our own book to read for our reading assignments or bring our favorite learning game to class SLIDE 16:English 1102 did a good job in allowing students to explore and think laterally. Our weekly blogs made us think laterally and our blog responses allowed us to explore different blogs online SLIDE 17: Peer-Based learning was heavily used in English 1102 because everything we did was as a group. For example, our google class documents SLIDE 18: I think that I will use the exploration principle the most in life because its always good to have an open mind to different ideas SLIDE 19: With my further education, i plan to use the skills i learned to allow me to study effectively in other subjects SLIDE 20: Overall, Lacy was an excellent teacher who customized her teaching to cater our learning.
